How do I know if counselling can support me?

It can be a common question to ask yourself, "Do I really need counselling?" or "How do I know if counselling would support me". There might be hesitation for you, particularly if you're questioning whether what you have going on in your life is truly 'big enough' or 'serious enough' for counselling. You may also say to yourself, that "others have it so much worse" and therefore, "you shouldn't seek counselling for what you have going on"...

Gentle reminder: No matter what you're going through or what your struggles are, they're valid...

The truth is, counselling isn't just for times of crisis - it can be a space to pause, reflect and talk through what you're experiencing, to understand yourself a little better. Sometimes moments of discomfort or uncertainty, are a sign that some support may make a difference.

Here are some signs where counselling can support

  1. You're struggling with persistent unpleasant emotions or feelings: For example, feeling anxious, angry, sad or just not like yourself most of the time and this can be exhausting. Sometimes, these emotions don't always disappear on their own and talking through them with someone who is trained to listen and hold a space for these emotions without judgement, can provide relief and clarity.

  2. Relationships feel challenging: conflict with a partner, family member or work colleague, or feeling disconnected from the people around you, can be tough. Counselling can help to explore these dynamics and support in finding clarity for what's happening for you in relationships. It can also help to find healthier ways for how you may want to navigate these moments in relationships.

  3. You feel stuck or overwhelmed: Sometimes, life can feel like a loop of the same struggles. You may want to change that sense of stuckness or overwhelm and are unsure of where to start. Counselling can provide a space to begin to untangle your thoughts by talking things through in a way where you can feel heard and understood.

  4. Your inner critic feels loud: Possibly a constant critical voice that says things like, "you're not good enough", a sense of low-self esteem or comparing yourself to others, can feel really heavy and impact your daily life. Exploring these patterns in counselling can help to understand them and soften the inner critic, building more self-compassion.

  5. Life Transitions and changes feel overwhelming: various changes in your life, whether that's work related, relationships or a life milestone, feel too much to carry and this can leave you feeling unsteady. Counselling can help navigate these moments, offering that time and space for you to find your footing again.

  6. Your body is feeling the strain of stress: Stress doesn't just live in the mind. Often, the body speaks too. It can show up in sleepless nights, tension, headaches or other physical symptoms. Exploring the emotional side of stress can help to give it space, see how this shows in your body and understand ways that are going to work for you to support your wellbeing.

A Final Reflection

Counselling isn't just for those in crisis, it can support no matter what you're struggling with. Anything that you're experiencing and feeling is valid and doesn't need to be minimised or made small. The signs above can be moments where counselling may benefit.
