Counselling for Low Confidence
& Self-Esteem

When being hard on yourself has become your normal

Do you question whether you're doing enough, or being enough?

It's like there's a constant inner voice criticising, second-guessing or telling you you've got something wrong?

If these words resonate, you're welcome to get in touch to arrange a free 20-minute call to explore what counselling with me is like, and whether I might be the right counsellor for you, to support with what you're experiencing.

Living with low self-esteem or a loud inner critic can feel exhausting and lonely

How low confidence & self-esteem can feel over time

Living with low self-esteem and a critical inner voice can be tiring. It can make everyday moments feel heavier than they need to be. Even small decisions can feel heavy with responsibility and pressure. Rest feels undeserving or hard to relax into. You might find yourself constantly trying to get things right and at the same time, feeling like you're falling short.

How low self-esteem can impact daily life

How low self-esteem affects you will be unique to you, and there are some ways it can often show up in every day life. You might find you:

Overthink Conversations

Over and over in your mind after they've happened, punishing yourself for what you said or did. Or how you wished you'd have said something different.

Harsh Self-Talk

You might be really hard on yourself, feel like you can't do anything right, or hold yourself to such high standards but never feel satisfied you've done enough.

Compare Yourself to Others

You might find you often compare how you're doing to other people. Benchmarking other people's successes or life to your own.

Where does low confidence and self-esteem come from?

For many people, this way of relating to themselves didn't appear out of nowhere. Low self-esteem can develop over time, shaped by beliefs, environments, relationships and the roles we learnt to take on.

At times, it may have even served a purpose or helped in some way to put yourself down. Perhaps it developed to keep you safe, helping you avoid getting things wrong, stay accepted or keep things under control?

But over time, it can feel like it's wearing you down and keeping you stuck.

How counselling can support with low confidence and self-esteem

Counselling with me isn't about pushing away or denying this part of you. We can start by trying to gently understand it.

Which could look like:

  • Exploring where you feel it came from

  • How low self-esteem shows up in your life

  • How it's shaping the way you relate to yourself

It's where this curiosity allows space to notice and become aware of what you may not have seen before. To explore how it might look and what might be different for you to show up for yourself in a way that is less critical and more accepting. Over time, this can shift how you speak to yourself and experience day-to-day life.

Working together

I offer counselling for low self-esteem and challenges with confidence in person based in Marlow, as well as online across the UK. My approach to counselling is person-centred. Which means you lead the way in what you want to bring.

It's my role here to sit beside you and really try to understand your world and experiences, and for you to be met with acceptance and curiosity within that. It isn't my role to direct or give advice, but to offer a space where you will be listened to. And it is in this space where self-esteem can be explored and understood in a way that connects you back to yourself in a more accepting way.
