Starting Counselling

What happens in Counselling?

If you're wondering what happens in counselling or what starting counselling looks like, this page will gently guide you through what to expect from your first session and beyond.

Starting counselling can feel like a daunting step. You might be wondering what might happen, what you're expected to say, or whether you'll feel comfortable talking to someone new. It's understandable to have questions or uncertainty before beginning.

This page is here to offer a little ease and gently explain what counselling sessions with me are like, how we might begin and what you can expect if we work together. So, that things feel clearer, steadier and less unknown before you take that first step.

There is no right way to start counselling. You don't need to have the right words, a clear goal or neatly packaged story to tell. We move at your pace and begin wherever you are.

What Happens Before Your First Counselling Session

Initial Contact

You’re welcome to get in touch by email, text or through the contact form on my website. I aim to respond within 48 hours, letting you know about availability and next steps. You can get in touch here.

Introductory Call

Before starting counselling, I offer a free 20-minute phone conversation. Whilst this isn't a counselling session, it's a chance for you to share a little about what led you to seek counselling, ask any questions you may have and get a sense of how I work. This allows us to understand whether I may be the right counsellor for you. There is no obligation to continue into counselling after this call.

What Happens in Your First Counselling Session

3

If working together feels like the next step, we'll arrange a first 50 minute session, which is £60.00 and can be in-person in Marlow or online across the UK. In-person sessions take place in a private counselling space, with further details shared when arranging your first session.

  • In a first counselling session, we'd understand a little more about what's brought you to counselling and what you are hoping to get from counselling overall.

  • We'll also talk about how we might want to work together, including how we can keep our work safe and supportive for you.

  • Ahead of our sessions starting, some information about counselling together will be sent to you beforehand, just in case you prefer to have this ahead of time.

What Happens After Your First Session

After the first session, ongoing counselling sessions are also 50 minutes at £60.00 per session. These take place at a time and frequency you are comfortable with, usually weekly or every 2 weeks. Sessions can take place in-person in Marlow (Monday & Wednesday, 9:30am - 5pm) or online (Monday - Thursday, 8:30am - 5pm).

Some people come to counselling with something specific they want to talk about and work through, while many come with a sense that something isn't quite right, but are unsure where to begin. Counselling can be short-term or open-ended, depending on what you need and what feels most supportive for you.

We'll regularly check in together about how you're finding things, how the work is feeling and whether counselling continues to be helpful. You are always in control of the pace, focus and how long you choose to stay.
